G. D. Vajra Langhe Freisa Kye 2019

The 2017 Langhe Freisa Kyé is a polished, understated, and supremely beautiful wine that showcases the varietal character of Freisa. The Vajras have tamed some of its rusticity while maintaining a well-balanced blend of wild cherry, plum, spice, licorice, tobacco, grilled herbs, and coffee flavors. With a deep ruby color, this expressive and rich wine offers notes of red berries, tobacco, rose, white pepper, hay, and herbs. A full body with well-balanced acidity and alcoholic strength leads to a long finish of dark fruit and spices. Aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, this tribute to Freisa showcases its noble and wild personality, reminiscent of its close relative, Nebbiolo. While still retaining a bit of edginess to the tannins, allowing for further bottle aging will only enhance this wine's level of ambition and complexity.
