Founded in 1885 by John Benson, a forty-niner of the California gold rush, Far Niente Winery combines select vineyards in Rutherford, Calistoga, and St. Helena which complement the estate fruit from Oakville. The winery hired architect Hamden McIntyre, creator of the former Christian Brothers winery now the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, to design the building. In 2008, Far Niente went solar in a revolutionary way with their FloatovoltaicTM system, becoming the first in the world to float a significant, grid-connected solar installation. Since the first vintage in 1982, Far Niente has had four decades to hone their skills with growing and making fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Beautiful aromas of dark plum, red cherry, and boysenberry open onto a plush and silky palate, layered with spiced cherry, cassis, and dark cherry with bright floral notes. A classic Napa Valley Cabernet, with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity supporting the wine throughout, while the finish is refined and polished. Pair with charcoal grilled hamburgers, herb roasted chicken, or butter basted filet mignon, and for cheese, an older clothbound Cheddar is delicious.
